What is Ragnarök?
The word Ragnarök comes from Old Norse and roughly translates to "Fate of the Gods" or "Twilight of the Gods." It refers to the cataclysmic series of events that will lead to the destruction of the world, including the deaths of many Norse gods, the collapse of civilisation, and the rebirth of a new world.
Unlike other myths that promise eternal life for deities, Norse mythology is unique because even its gods are doomed. This prophecy, told in ancient texts like the Poetic Edda and Prose Edda, suggests that everything in existence is part of a cycle—destruction will lead to renewal.
What does Ragnarök mean?

Ragnarök in Viking mythology is a story about fate, destruction, and renewal. It teaches that even gods are not immortal and that the end of one age leads to the beginning of another.
The events that lead to Ragnarök so not happen all at once. The end of the world comes in stages, beginning with tragedy and betrayal long before the great battle itself.
The Story of Ragnarök
Norse mythology tells of a time when the world will end in fire and war. This event, called Ragnarök, has not yet happened but is foretold to bring the downfall of the gods, the destruction of the world, and its eventual rebirth. Unlike other mythological endings, the Norse prophecy of Ragnarök is not seen as a single moment of catastrophe but rather as a series of unavoidable events leading to a final battle between gods and giants.
What Will Cause Ragnarök?

Ragnarök will not come without warning. The gods will know their time is near when certain signs appear, each marking the slow unravelling of the world.
The first and greatest omen will be the death of Balder, the beloved god of light. According to the prophecy, Loki will trick Balder’s blind brother, Hodr, into killing him with a mistletoe-tipped arrow, the only thing that can harm him. His death will throw Asgard into mourning, and with it, the first step toward Ragnarök will be taken.
Following Balder’s death, the mortal world will face Fimbulwinter, a brutal winter lasting three years with no summer in between. Crops will fail, food will become scarce, and humans will turn against each other in a desperate struggle for survival. War and betrayal will consume humanity, breaking the bonds of loyalty and honour.
Meanwhile, in the realm of the gods, the creatures destined to bring destruction will break free from their chains.
- Fenrir, the monstrous wolf who was bound by the gods, will snap his unbreakable bonds and roam free.
- Jörmungandr, the world serpent, will rise from the depths of the ocean, thrashing his coils and poisoning the sky and sea with his venom.
- Loki, who had been imprisoned for his crimes, will escape and take command of the forces of chaos, preparing for war against the gods.
With these events, the final battle will be set in motion.
What Will Happen in Ragnarök?
Once Ragnarök begins, it cannot be stopped. The gods will gather their forces, knowing they march toward certain death. The battlefield will be Vigrid Plain, a vast land where the final conflict will take place.
- Odin, the Allfather, will lead the gods and the fallen warriors of Valhalla.
- Loki will command the giants, the dead, and the monstrous beings who seek to overthrow the gods.
- Surtr, the fire giant, will march with his flaming sword, ready to set the world ablaze.
- Loki, now free from his bonds, will lead the army of the dead to battle. They will arrive on the ship Naglfar, made from the fingernails and toenails of the dead, sailing across the flooded world to Vigrid Plain. The giants and Loki’s forces will disembark, ready to face the gods for the final battle.
The Great Battles of Ragnarök

When the battle begins, the cosmos will shake. The sun and moon will be swallowed by great wolves, plunging the world into darkness. The earth itself will tremble, causing mountains to collapse and the seas to flood the land.
- Odin will face Fenrir in battle. Despite his wisdom and power, the Allfather will be swallowed whole by the monstrous wolf. His son, Vidar, will avenge him, tearing Fenrir apart with his immense strength.
- Thor will fight Jörmungandr, the Midgard Serpent. The god of thunder will land a final, mighty blow with his hammer, killing the great beast—but not before being poisoned by its deadly venom. He will take nine steps before collapsing, dead.
- Loki and Heimdall, the watchman of Asgard, will meet in battle. They will be evenly matched, and both will die, striking each other down at the same time.
- Tyr, the god of war, will fight Garmr, the monstrous hound of the underworld. Their battle will be fierce, and both will fall.
- Surtr will set the world on fire, his flames consuming everything, including Asgard itself.
The destruction will be complete. The world as it was will cease to exist.
What Will Happen to the Earth During Ragnarök?
As the gods fall, the world will be torn apart. The great wolf Skoll will devour the sun, and his brother Hati will swallow the moon. The stars will disappear, plunging the cosmos into eternal night.
The land will shake violently, cracking apart. The mountains will crumble, the seas will rise, and floods will drown what remains. The great World Tree, Yggdrasil, will tremble, its mighty branches quivering under the weight of destruction. Some legends suggest that it, too, will perish, while others claim it will endure, sheltering those who survive.
All nine realms of Norse mythology will be affected—Asgard, the home of the gods, will be consumed in fire. Midgard, the realm of humans, will drown beneath the rising seas. Hel, the land of the dead, will empty as its inhabitants join the battle. Nothing will remain untouched.
Finally, Surtr’s fire will sweep across the world, turning everything to ash. The earth will sink into the sea, disappearing beneath the waves. Nothing will be left of the old world.
Will Any Norse Gods Survive Ragnarök?

Despite the overwhelming destruction, not all of the gods will perish. When the flames die down and the waters recede, a new world will emerge—and with it, a few surviving gods. Among those who will endure Ragnarök are:
- Vidar, the silent and powerful son of Odin, who will slay Fenrir and survive to rule in the new world.
- Vali, another son of Odin, who will remain after the chaos ends.
- Magni and Modi, the sons of Thor, who will inherit their father’s hammer, Mjölnir, and carry on his strength.
- Balder and Hodr, once lost to death, who will return from the underworld to rule over the renewed world.
They will find a land cleansed by fire and water, fresh and unspoiled.
What Will Happen After Ragnarök?
Though the world will have been destroyed, it will not be gone forever.
A new earth will rise from the sea, untouched by the destruction that came before. The mountains will stand tall once more, the rivers will flow with clear water, and green fields will spread across the land.
The sun, once swallowed, will be replaced by her daughter, who will shine just as brightly, bringing warmth and life to the reborn world.
The surviving gods will gather on Iðavöllr, a golden plain where the halls of the past will lie in ruins, but where a new age will begin. New halls will rise from the ashes, including Gimlé, a golden hall where the righteous will live in peace for eternity. Some say that the greatest of these halls will shine brighter than the sun itself.
Will Humans Survive Ragnarök?
Not all life will be lost. Two humans, Lif and Lifthrasir, will survive by hiding in a sacred forest, untouched by fire or flood. They will emerge after the destruction, stepping into the renewed world.
From them, humanity will be reborn, beginning the cycle of life again.
