The course begins with an introduction to the field of zoology, including what it is, how it’s studied, and its five major branches. You’ll get to grips with the scientific methods used to study animals and learn how zoologists make sense of the vast variety of life on Earth.
From there, you'll learn about the history of zoology, exploring the lives and legacies of important figures in the field and how their discoveries shaped our modern understanding of animal life. You’ll also look at how evolution and adaptation have allowed species to thrive in a range of environments.
Throughout the course, you’ll explore important areas of zoological science, including:
Animal Classification: Learn how animals are grouped based on physical and genetic traits, and understand the purpose behind biological naming systems.
Animal Behaviour: Discover the instincts, social patterns, communication styles, and survival behaviours that shape life in the wild.
Genetics & Breeding: Understand how genetics influences everything from appearance to behaviour, and how breeding is managed in both wildlife conservation and domestic settings.
Diversity of Life: Explore the huge range of species on Earth, from the smallest invertebrates to large mammals, and how they each play a role in maintaining biodiversity.
A big focus of this zoology course is understanding how animals live in and interact with their environments. You’ll explore ecosystems, food chains, and the natural cycles that support life, including the water, nitrogen, and carbon cycles.
You'll also learn about common animal diseases, including how they’re diagnosed and the ways in which they’re treated. The course covers both domestic and wild animals for a well-rounded view of animal health.
As the course progresses, you’ll look at real-world applications of zoology, including how animals are handled and rehabilitated in various settings. You’ll learn how animal healthcare facilities operate and what it takes to monitor animal welfare and spot health issues early.
To help bring everything together, the final module presents a range of real-world case studies. These give you practical insight into how zoological knowledge is applied in settings like wildlife conservation, research, rescue centres, and more. It’s a great way to connect theory with real-life examples and see the impact this knowledge can make.
By the end of the course, you’ll have a strong foundation in zoology, plus a certificate to support your next steps, whether you're going onto further study or a role in animal care.
