At the Centre of Excellence, we believe education can help change lives, no matter your age, experience, or circumstances. This story is about Mandy Barling, a remarkable student who has used her learning to make a significant impact in her community.

Mandy, a dedicated Domestic Abuse support worker, has channelled her personal encounters with narcissistic abuse into a fervent mission to empower others. After studying the Dealing With Narcissism Diploma Course at Centre of Excellence, she was able to set up her own domestic support group, helping women through various difficulties.

Education as a Stepping Stone

Mandy's journey with Centre of Excellence began during an important moment in her life. After overcoming and reflecting on her experience with narcissistic abuse, she realised the necessity for more support in the domestic abuse sector. Many survivors, she noticed, were left to go through the aftermath of abuse with little assistance, making ongoing support essential for safety, prevention, growth, mental health, and well-being.

With a newfound passion to help and prevent other women from suffering similar abuse, Mandy wanted to combine her lived experience with formal qualifications. This pursuit led her to the Narcissism Diploma Course offered by Centre of Excellence.

Mandy enrolled in our course and soon found the materials to be exceptionally thorough. "The modules were very clear," she recalls, "and the description, traits, and cycle of narcissists' abuse were described to an exceptionally high standard."

Building a Supportive Community

Mandy's educational journey equipped her with the essential tools to actively support women at risk of or experiencing abuse.

Inspired by what she learned, Mandy founded 'Behind Closed Doors,' an informal domestic abuse support group in Fleetwood. The group began online, offering support, advice, and guidance. As a survivor herself, Mandy provided a comforting presence that encouraged women to reach out and be heard, which they might hesitate to do with professional services.

'Behind Closed Doors' offers a range of supportive services, including weekly drop-in sessions, risk assessments, resilience-building workshops, and well-being walks, among others. The impact of the group has been powerful, earning recognition from local MPs, the police, the NHS, and even an accolade from the BBC's 'Make a Difference Awards'.

“Centre of Excellence has helped towards the support I provide to Women experiencing Domestic Abuse,” Mandy says. “I highly recommend this course, not only to any who may be experiencing abuse, but also to professional services to heighten their knowledge.”
