Top 5 Most Famous UFO Sightings in History

The Roswell UFO incident is hailed as the grandfather of all UFO mysteries. It took place in the summer of 1947 in Roswell, New Mexico, and began when an unidentified object crashed on a ranch. 

At first, the U.S military reported that they had recovered a “flying disc”, and news spread quickly as headlines emerged about the capture of a genuine flying saucer! However, this narrative took a 180° turn as the military retracted their initial statement and claimed that the flying object was actually a weather balloon. To no-one’s surprise, people started wondering whether this was a cover-up and believed that the military had indeed recovered something extraterrestrial. This incident became a symbol of government secrecy and has since influenced pop culture and science fiction. To this day, the Roswell UFO incident continues to be a hot topic of debate and investigation. 

If you’ve heard of the Roswell incident, then you’re probably familiar with the Rendlesham Forest UFO incident too. Often referred to as the “British Roswell”, this puzzling incident occurred in late December 1980 near the twin U.S Air Forces bases of Bentwaters and Woodbridge in Suffolk, England. What began as a routine security patrol quickly transformed into one of the most perplexing UFO encounters in history.

On December 26 1980, several military personnel reported seeing strange, glowing lights descending into Rendlesham Forest. Two days later Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt, the deputy base commander, was called out to investigate as the lights returned. He was examining “landing marks” on the forest floor until he was then confronted by the mysterious light. He recorded his observations on an audio tape:  “There is no doubt about it – there’s some type of strange flashing red light ahead” and “We see strange strobe-like flashes to the... rather sporadic, but there’s definitely something there. Some kind of phenomenon.” The audio tape lasted an entire 18 minutes and 12 seconds. 

Some believe it was an extraterrestrial encounter, while others propose government experimentation or psychological warfare experiments as explanations. 

More recently in March 1997, the night sky over Phoenix, Arizona, became the stage for an awe-inspiring event that would come to be known as the Phoenix Lights. Thousands of residents gazed into the sky as a series of strange, luminous orbs crossed the sky leaving behind an eerie glow. 

Not only did this incident have thousands of eye witnesses, but many of their testimonies were consistent. They reported seeing a massive V shaped formation of lights silently gliding overhead. They were described as amber or orange, and some witnesses claimed to have seen a solid, dark structure behind them. Then-Governor of Arizona, Fife Symington, initially made fun of the entire incident, but later admitted to witnessing the event himself and expressing his belief that it was otherworldly. 

Government authorities initially offered explanations ranging from military flares to aircraft. However, these explanations didn't align with the witnesses' accounts of a massive, slow-moving object. To this day, there are no concrete answers and the Phoenix Lights remain an enigma….

Heading back to the sixties, this incident was not only a UFO sighting, but also an alleged abduction incident. In September 1961, couple Betty and Barney Hill were driving through New Hampshire's White Mountains when they observed a strange craft in the sky, which appeared to be following their car. Barney initially believed it to be a commercial aeroplane until the flying object suddenly descended and headed towards them. They claimed to have experienced “missing time” as, according to them, their journey was mysteriously shortened.  

The Hills recounted being taken aboard a spacecraft, where they were subjected to medical examinations by beings they described as "Grey Aliens." The details of their alleged abduction included experiments and telepathic communication. 

When they arrived home in the morning, their watches had stopped working and their memories of the abduction became fragmented although both Betty and Barney’s recollection of the event remained consistent with each other, even under hypnosis during their medical assessments. 

This was one of the first widely-publicised accounts of alien abduction and was met with both scepticism and intrigue. However, despite everything, the couple made no effort to seek publicity and stuck to the events of their story for the remainder of their lives. 

In much more recent times, another hugely popular UFO sighting incident happened - the “O’hare Saucer”. On a clear afternoon on November 7th 2006, airport personnel, including pilots, airline employees, and ground staff, witnessed something they’d never forget. Above Gate C17 at the airport, an odd disc-shaped object hovered in the sky, with no conventional explanation. Witnesses described it as a metallic, silver-grey saucer with a hazy, cloud-like centre. 

But what really set this encounter apart was how it abruptly disappeared. According to eye-witnesses, after several minutes of stationary hovering, the saucer punched a hole through the clouds and vanished at an incredible speed! Airport authorities took the reports seriously and launched an investigation into the incident. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) initially denied any knowledge of the event and later attributed it to "a weather phenomenon." Despite their stance on this incident, the multiple witness testimonies have kept the O'Hare International Airport Saucer incident alive to this day.
